Lighting for Meyer Lemon Growing
Providing enough light for the citrus plant might be the biggest challenge when it’s being grown indoors. Placement needs to be where it can get as much light as possible. Place it by a sunny window if you can. However, it’s a delicate balance as too much direct sun can cause damage. You may want to use grow lights which use a cool and warm bulb.
Watering your Lemon Tree
When your citrus plant is in a pot, watering is key. You will want to keep the soil moist, but not wet. You can test it by sticking your finger in the soil. Stick it in up to your second knuckle and if it feels damp at your fingertip, wait for watering. If it feels dry, add water until it drains out the bottom. During the cooler months when using the heater, mist the leaves.
Harvesting the Lemons
Keeping a lemon tree inside during winter can take a year for the fruit to ripen. Citrus fruit only continues ripening while still on the tree, so don’t pick it before it fully ripens. Meyer lemons are ripe when they become the color of an egg yolk. They will also be slightly soft to touch. Cut the fruit off using scissors or a knife to the plant isn’t damaged during the process.
